Foster Care Per Diem and Relative Subsidy Increase

Effective July 1, 2017, the foster care per diem will increase by $10/day and relative subsidy programs rates will increase by $5/day. This is notably the highest increase ever approved for foster parents and relative caregivers in Georgia and a significant accomplishment in providing caregivers with the resources needed to meet the growing needs of children in foster care. The new Foster Care Basic Per Diem will be as follows:

Child age Birth through 5 $25.27 – per day
Child age 6 through 12 $27.26 – per day
Child age 13 and older $29.65 – per day

The increased Relative Subsidies are as follows:
Child age Birth through 5 $523.47 – per month
Child age 6 through 12 $571.83 – per month
Child age 13 and older $630.23 – per month

Unfortunately, this increase will not be applicable to the adoption assistance subsidy program. Children receiving basic foster care per diem who are adopted by their foster parent(s) will receive the basic adoption assistance rate as the adoption assistance monthly subsidy. An increase in adoption assistance was not included in the 2018 budget. Moving forward, I will work very closely with the Governor and legislators to have the basic adoption assistance subsidy increased to a rate closer to the foster care rate. In the meantime, the adoption assistance rates will continue to be paid as follows:

Child age Birth through 6 $441.04 – per month
Child age 6 through 12 $463.85 – per month
Child age 13 and older $486.67 – per month

Please be mindful that adoption assistance is not intended to replace the financial responsibility of the adoptive parent(s) to support his/her child; and that families should plan to use their personal resources to help provide for their child(ren)’s needs. Additionally, there must be an assessment of a prospective adoptive parent’s financial ability to meet the current and ongoing needs of a child(ren). Foster and Adoptive parents should contact AFPAG President, Verdell Daniels at 1-877-804-6610, staff should contact your Regional Adoption Coordinator (RAC) or Deborah Burrus should you have questions, concerns or issues regarding this matter.
